TERMS OF USE

The Studio operates a 17 week fall and spring semester.  Fall semester usually begins in August and ends before Christmas. Spring semester begins in January and runs through May. A summer session is also offered.

Because of the number of teachers and room availablility we do not have  individual teaching schedules on-line.  Once you register you will be contacted by phone or email to schedule your lesson at the most convenient time for you. 

 Go to the 'register' page and register on-line. Summer Registration 2010 now available.  May 24- August 6, 2010.  Choose as few as 4 weeks of lessons up to 10 weeks.  Make summer lessons work with your vacation schedule.

Master Classes

This summer Colonial’s music academy, The Studio, will be offering Master Classes for musicians at all stages of development. Highly qualified, guest instructors will challenge you to stretch your talents in a workshop-style setting Saturday mornings in June and July. The Master Classes are designed to increase your knowledge and skills, while encouraging you to continue growing in your musical talents throughout the summer.

 

Here’s the Line-up:

 

Voice

Instructor: Adelaide Muir Trombetta (June 5, 9:00am – 12:00pm), Upper room

Voice Master Class is appropriate for singers of school age and adults at all stages of development. Breathing, tone, sound production, care for the voice, and how to stylize are just some of the great things you will learn in this class.

 

Improvisation 101

Instructor: Gary Hallquist (June 12, 9:00am - 12:00pm) Choir Room

Are you a musician with a reasonable mastery of your instrument who has never studied improvisation before? Improv 101 is for you. We will give you all the tips and techniques of the masters at a level accessible to any good musician, in both the jazz idiom and praise-and-worship.

 

Improvisation 201

Instructor Gary Hallquist (June 19, 9:00am – 12:00pm)  Choir Room

Want to go deeper, building on what you learned in Improvisation 101? Improv 201 is designed for the musician who has a rudimentary knowledge of improvisation who wants to learn more about how to skillfully play over chord changes, how to incorporate modes, and various tricks and tips for developing your improvisational skills

 

Drums

Instructor Dale Baker (June 26, 9:00am – 12:00pm)  Choir Room

Drummers at all levels of set playing will find this class seriously helpful. Basics of drum set playing in various settings, such as worship, studio, rock band, jazz band will be covered. Equipment and techniques will be discussed. Come learn from one of the best!

 

Strings

Instructor Luca Trombetta (July 10, 9:00 – 12:00pm)  Parlor

String players at any level will benefit from participating. Bring your instruments, as the instructor will work hands-on with you while providing everyone with helpful insights into all the various facets of playing a string instrument.

 

Accompanying for Pianists

Instructor Rob Hallquist (July 17, 9:00 – 12:00pm)  Choir Room

Many learn to play the piano, but not many also learn the skills necessary to do a first-rate job of accompanying ensembles, singers, and instrumentalists. Bring challenging pieces from your church choir or whatever ensemble you accompany, and the instruction provided during your “lesson” will benefit all who participate.

 

Jazz and Contemporary Piano Playing

Instructor Ernest A. Turner II (July 24, 9:00 – 12:00pm)  Choir room

If you are a classically-trained pianist who would like to learn more about playing as part of a rhythm section in a jazz or contemporary setting, this master class is designed just for you. Ernest will challenge you to develop your abilities to go beyond the page: to find and establish the right feel and to play within the style appropriately.

 

Electric Bass

Instructor Rachel Moninger (July 31, 9:00 – 12:00pm)  choir room

Whether you already play bass or are a guitarist who would like to learn the bass, this master class will challenge you to new levels of understanding about bass playing and the role of the electric bass in a rhythm section. Worship musicians will especially benefit from Rachel’s approach to bass playing as part of a worship band.
